Celebrating Over 20 Years of Bicycle Safety

helmets are the number one tool for preventing head and brain injuries while biking

Sinas Dramis Law Firm once again upheld its cherished tradition of providing local children with bicycle helmets by hosting its Lids for Kids events in Lansing and Grand Rapids. Supported by community partners and generous volunteers, these annual helmet giveaways are celebrating over 20 years of bicycle safety promotion.

Did you know that a correctly fitted helmet is the single most effective defense against head and brain injury during bicycle accidents? According to the Children’s Safety Network, bicycle helmets are credited with:

  • 85% reduction in head injuries
  • 88% reduction in brain injuries
  • At least 75% reduction in severe brain trauma

Yet, under 15% of children under 14 wear helmets consistently. Lids for Kids is dedicated to improving this statistic—one helmet at a time.

Lansing Helmet Giveaway

Storms leading up to and during Lids for Kids in Lansing on May 17 didn’t deter our volunteers or community members from attending.
The impact was significant: 260 children received properly fitted helmets and 24 lucky winners rode off on brand-new bikes.

The event featured balloon art, appearances by the League of Enchantment, interaticve games, and a Lansing Fire Department engine demo.

Special thanks to Mayor Andy Schor, Council Member Trina Pehlivanoglu, Ingham County Commissioner Thomas Morgan, and WLNS‑TV 6 News Anchor Megan Viecelli for their participation and support.

Grand Rapids Helmet Giveaway

In contrast to the Lansing event, May 31st in Grand Rapids featured clear skies and 72°F—ideal conditions for biking and spending the morning with the community at Garfield Park.

On hand to distribute 424 helmets, raffle 29 bicycles to excited kids, and share bike safety tips were Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, State Representative Kristian Grant, Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, Grand Rapids City Commissioner Marshall Kilgore, and Fox 17’s Josh Berry.

Lids for Kids: Two Decades of Impact

Since its inception, Lids for Kids has equipped more than 14,000 children in Michigan with crash‑tested helmets.

“We’re not just legal professionals—we’re parents and neighbors. Seeing a child injured is the last thing we want,” said Tom Sinas, partner at Sinas Dramis Law Firm. “Lids for Kids is a simple, yet profound way to champion brain injury prevention.”
