Stephen Sinas Testifies Before Senate Committee in Support of Insurance Reform
On December 10, 2025, Sinas Dramis Law Firm partner and Michigan personal injury attorney Stephen Sinas testified before the Senate Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection Committee on proposed legislation (Senate Bill 245) that would strengthen Michigan consumers’ legal rights against insurance companies that wrongfully deny insurance claims.
What Senate Bill 245 Would Change for Michigan Insurance Consumers
Senate Bill (SB) 245 calls for modifying the Uniform Trade Practices Act (MCL 500.2006 et seq) in several significant ways. Most notably, the bill would finally provide Michigan consumers an individual right to sue insurance companies for damages they suffer when claim denials are carried out in unfair, unreasonable, or deceptive ways—practices that are already prohibited under the Act.
Current Law Limits Consumer Rights Against Insurance Companies
While the current version of the Uniform Trade Practices Act prohibits insurers from engaging in various types of misconduct when handling insurance claims, it does not allow consumers to sue their insurance companies for damages suffered from that misconduct. Instead, the only consequence insurers currently face is the possibility of sanctions or fines imposed by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS)—penalties that often fail to fully hold insurers accountable or compensate harmed policyholders.
Why Sinas Dramis Supports Senate Bill 245
As Stephen’s testimony explained, SB 245 should be passed into law because a meaningful legal remedy should exist for individuals who are wronged by the actions others. Without the ability to bring a civil claim, Michigan consumers are left without a direct path to justice when insurers act in bad faith.
Sinas Dramis Law Firm strongly supports the passage of SB 245 because it will finally give consumers a meaningful remedy for damages they suffer when insurance companies wrongfully handle and/or deny valid insurance claims. Furthermore, in doing so, SB 245 will incentivize insurers to handle claims more responsibly, helping to reduce wrongful delays, denials, and deceptive claim practices throughout Michigan.
Stephen’s advocacy reflects Sinas Dramis Law Firm’s long-standing role as Michigan’s Advocates for the Injured and our continued promise of “We Do More” for residents across the state.

What’s Next for Senate Bill 245
Although the Senate committee did not vote on the bill during the December 10th hearing, the legislation is expected to remain under consideration in 2026 as lawmakers continue to evaluate insurance bad faith reform in Michigan.
